Last night was INCREDIBLE! As you might have seen in my last post, it left me in a state of awe and shock... I suppose I could explain a little concerning my history with his music and just why I was so happy to be there last night.
It was 2003, and I was taking advantage of the "Users also enjoyed.." feature of some music website. I was browsing the artists whom John Mayer fans also enjoyed, and there it was: Teitur: Poetry & Aeroplanes. I gave the tracks a go and it was "love at first listen". I went to Borders sometime that week in hopes of procuring a copy of this sparkling, calming, wonderful CD. To my dismay, there were no copies in stock - it was a special order. I impatiently awaited the shipment that would bring me this little-known treasure. About a week and a half later, it had arrived!
Whenever I get down, I usually take long drives (in the rain is the most therapeutic for some reason. I think it has something to do with the little raindrops on the windshield and the way lights shine through them) just to think and sort everything out. Ever since I found Poetry & Aeroplanes, and had a license, it has always, always, been what I listen to on my drives. No matter what the situation, Teitur's thoughtful melodies and lyrics somehow bring me peace of mind. I can cry to it without melancholy; I can sing along with it and everything sort of disappears; or I can silently listen for new inspiration and assurance while I meander the dark streets. I've always felt very grateful for those songs and for the mind that created them, and for the hope and quiet confidence it gave me about the good in this world.
The more I find out about him, the more I grow to like him... Well, I'm rambling now, and you probably don't need to know his life's history, or the fact that English is his second language and that he now speaks five. (Couldn't resist) So suffice it to say, I find him a very beautiful soul. His attitude about life is so wonderful to me. He finds details and the stories of both friends and strangers what makes life beautiful. And now, about five years and three albums later, a lucky glance at concert listings gave me the chance to see him live!
After patiently waiting through three opening bands, (One of which was really great! Her name is Jessie Baylin and she has a great smokey voice and awesome folky-jazz music.), he walked forward from the back of the room, and I suddenly became a beaming fool.
I was actually standing feet away from the Faroese man who gave me such immense comfort, unknowingly, for all those years. A smile was the only shape my lips could form. I stood on the front row and soaked up every moment I could. He is such a quirky, wonderful man. The only way I can describe his performances is to compare him to August Rush. He conducts every member of this band with meaningful looks, and even twitches his hand like a conductor to keep the beat subconsciously when he is not playing his guitar. He loves music so much, and anyone can tell. He seems so shy, that I'm amazed he has chosen to become a musician and perform in front of crowds every night, but very glad he has!
He played upbeat dancin' music, three songs from Poetry & Aeroplanes, and many other great songs from his other albums including one from Kata Hornid in Faroese! Yes! He ended his show with an a cappella version of his song "The Singer" and left to booming applause that continued until well after he had disappeared from sight, and soon brought him back for a great encore! When he was finished most of the audience left, but not us! We waited for him to come out so we could meet him.
I was unbelievably nervous to speak with him, let alone to shake his hand, but he was so sweet and thanked us when we told him like little dorks how wonderful he was that night. He tried on Missy's newly purchased hat, posed with us for a picture or two, and signed a light switch cover that I bought that night from the Coal Umbrella which now hangs on my wall! (A little piece of art!) I can't believe all of it happened. It was a dream come true, and I am so happy it happened. I hope that I can tell him someday how much his music means to me.. Maybe in Heaven? Maybe never, but I loved last night so much! It seems so amazing to me how someone so far away could have such a helping hand in my life. And then even more amazing that he came right to my neighborhood and that I got to see him face to face!
Thanks for reading if you have, and sorry that was so long and a bit gushy, but it's all true! Here are the two treasures I took home with me:

PS: Teitur [tie-tor] is an Old Norse word that means happy. .How lovely.
